Written by: Joan Dyer

I began quilting nearly 18 years ago, while living in Southern California (Redondo Beach). While there, I was active in the South Bay Quilters Guild and the "Quilts on the Wall: Fiber Artists".

Prior to developing a love of quilting, I was an active potter, working at the Palos Verdes Art Center. I was a member of the Torrance Craftsman’s Guild and participated in many craft shows there, selling pots and quilts.

In 1989 I began to dye and paint fabric for quilting, and selling it at quilt shows under the name of "Dyer's Delights". For many years I was a vendor at shows throughout Southern California and as far north as the Pacific International Quilt Festival. Now I dye and paint fabric only for friends, guild projects, and myself.

Since moving north to Grass Valley in 2001 with my husband Jim, I have joined the Pine Tree Quilt Guild in Grass Valley, the Foothill Quilt Guild in Auburn, and I am a founding member of the Mountain Art Quilters, an art quilt group with more than 40 members.

All of my quilts are my original designs. I learned traditional methods of piecing by hand when I began this journey with fabric, but soon began to enjoy the design phase of quiltmaking. Now most of my quilts feature curved piecing and hand-dyed fabrics. My record book includes all my work, from single blocks for gifts to queen-sized quilts, and numbers 232 projects to date.

My quilts have been shown in numerous national and international, regional and local shows over the years, and have won many awards.

Some of the shows I have participated in are:

•  American Quilters Society, Paducah, KY
•  International Quilt Festival, Houston, TX
    (6 quilts in 5 shows)
•  Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival IV, Williamsburg, VA
•  Road to California, Ontario, CA (3 quilts)
•  National Quilting Association show, Riverside, CA,
    1995 (Third place ribbon)
•  Pacific International Quilt Festival, Santa Clara, CA
    (7 quilts in 6 shows)

Regional shows include:

•  Natural Impressions II,
Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History
•  Las Primeras Quilt Show, San Pedro, CA
•  Nevada County Fair, Grass Valley (4 years)
•  Textile/Fiber Arts Show,
The Arts Building Gallery, Auburn, CA (2 years)

Many local shows:

•  Pine Tree Quilt Guild, Grass Valley
•  Foothill Quilt Guild, Auburn
•  South Bay Quilters Guild, Torrance
•  Torrance Craftsmen's Guild Show, Torrance
•  Glendale Quilt Guild Show, Glendale
•  Tulsa Quilt Guild Show, Tulsa, OK

I have had many quilts published, some with instructions, in national magazines and books, including:

•  Quilters Newsletter Magazine (5 issues)
•  Quilting Today Magazine, 1992
•  Traditional Quiltworks, #43, 1996
•  America’s Best Quilting Projects,
    Rodale Press,1996
•  The Classic American Quilt Collection --
    Amish, Rodale Press, 1996
•  An Amish Adventure, Roberta Horton, 1996
•  Great American Quilts 1998, Oxmoor House, 1998
•  The Magical Effects of Color, Joen Wolfrom, 1992
•  The Visual Dance, Joen Wolfrom, 1995
•  Patchwork Persuasion, Joen Wolfrom, 1997
•  Color Play, Joen Wolfrom, 2000
•  Scrap Quilt Celebration, Rodale Press, 2002

The book, “Great American Quilts 1998”, contains photos and instructions for my daughter’s queen-sized wedding quilt, which was the pattern used for the 2007 Opportunity Quilt for the Pine Tree Quilt Guild. It is called “Galaxy” and was won by a ticket holder at the May 2007 show.

Many of Joan's quilts are available for purchase.
