Ruby Foster - Featured Quilter
  2010 Quilt Show

Photographs by E. C. Dabis
Brass safety-pins for basting, and white cotton gloves for more grip.

Written by: Donna Foote

Ruby began sewing at age seven and hasn't stopped yet. Her aunt was her inspiration and taught her to sew on an old fashioned treadle machine. They made quilts for the family, a necessity for surviving those cold Oklahoma winters!

She continued to sew on this old treadle until 1950 when her stepfather bought her her first electric machine. She made her first quilt in 1952 and to date, Ruby estimates that she has completed over 200 quilts! She also has made dolls for which she has won ribbons at the county fair.

Today, Ruby quilts in her huge sewing room and displays her quilts in her lovely home. Ruby says, "Christmas is my favorite time of year," and her home certainly reflects the holiday spirit. Enter her home during the holiday season and you feel as if you've been transported into a Christmas wonderland.

Besides the twinkling lights on trees decorated with her fabulous ornament collection, Christmas quilts adorn walls and balcony and drape over chairs. Many of these quilts are traditional and reflect her talents in embroidery, appliqué and painting.

Love and happiness lives right here!
Robert and Ruby Foster - 2010
Ruby has been devoted to the Pine Tree Quilt Guild which she joined in 1985. She has always entered at least one quilt in the annual quilt show and the Nevada County Fair. She has won many ribbons and one year won Viewer's Choice at the fair.

For many of the quilt shows she has done the flower arrangements and has participated in many other things for the show. Her love of color and flowers is reflected in her quilts on display today.

Currently she is involved in project HOPE (Helping Other People Eat) through her church. She has donated one of her gorgeous quilts in order to raise money for the expansion of the church kitchen. Her church is one of several in the area which provides food and shelter for the homeless.

Ruby's generosity is boundless. All of her children and grandchildren have received lovely quilts and two quilts for her great grandchildren are in progress. While she gives many of her glorious quilts away, today's display is dazzling. Notice her attention to detail and her use of color. Then study the overall presentation and you will see that not only are her quilts exquisite but also upbeat and charming.
